Valérie … the unofficial soundtrack

I moved to Québec in the summer of 2008. Having moved from the west coast in the states, and living in Reno, San Francisco, and Seattle for years, I was only aware of a small amount of music from Québec. Living in Montréal and being immersed in Québécoise culture it has been nothing short of a musical adventure to the ears.

Offering a wealth of music and information are the blogs Psyquébélique, Patrimoine PQ, Vente de Garage, L’Homme Scalp, and À la carte. And when the fix for vinyl is needed, local sellers in Montréal, Sonowax and Eskimoplanete, can cure any wax withdrawl you are experiencing.

One of the most exciting musical discoveries for my ears are film Soundtracks. I have been a lover of soundtrack music for many years, and since my formidable years as a teenager I have paid close attention to composers, arrangers, and musical supervisors when watching ear-catching films with addictive sonic hooks.

Comfort Stand Mix

Comfort Stand was an active Net Label from 2003-2006 featuring artists from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States.

The label’s 80 albums, 16 singles, and 8 compilations remain online, but the project has closed it’s doors. Simply because I didn’t have the drive to keep it going and got somewhat burned out. I can see starting another label (net or physical) in the future. For now however, it is one of the last things on my mind as it was a labor of love, not paid, and I can remember spending anywhere from 20-40 hours of personal time weekly working with artists and releases.

Earlier this year I was approached by the mix Net Label op3n to do a mix of my favorite Comfort Stand tracks. I mixed together 42 tracks from the label catalog. It was tough picking from the 1000+ song catalog and trying to narrow it down. I didn’t think of what you the listener might like, I featured tracks that struck a chord with me, or wouldn’t leave my head, or just simply ones that I thought deserved to be shared and heard. I left out a lot of artists, and while I could have created a mix featuring the 179 artists on the label, I choose to keep songs playing longer for the overall vibe of the mix. The mix is now archived at Phlow.
